Eligible graduate students are invited to apply for 1-2 years of fellowship support, accompanied by comprehensive training opportunities in translational sensory science. Applications are currently being accepted and will be reviewed on March 6, 2021.
Funding basics
Being a funded trainee of the NRT cohort includes:
- 1-2 years of fellowship support (12-month stipend of $34,000 plus tuition remission and health insurance)
- Eligibility to apply for mini-grants supporting student research and travel to conferences
- Professional development activities
- Opportunities for industry internships
Requirements
Applicants must meet a number of criteria:
- Strong academic record
- Evidence of interest in interdisciplinary training related to sensory science, cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, biomedical engineering, or related areas
- A strong interest in the project's interdisciplinary research goals, in particular applications of basic science to the development of assistive technologies
- Ability to take one or more courses in the graduate minor area of translational sensory science
- US citizenship or permanent residency
- Current enrollment as a 1st or 2nd year PhD student at the University of Minnesota
Those interested who are not in their 1st or 2nd year or who are not US citizens are not eligible for fellowship funding but are invited to apply to join the training cohort. These individuals are still eligible to participate in training activities and apply for mini-grants.
Procedure
Interested students are encouraged to contact the NRT leadership team to express their interest prior to applying. Formal applications should consist of a submit a single PDF uploaded here:
- Cover letter (not to exceed two pages, 11-point font) explaining their qualifications above, describing their interest in translational sensory science, and identifying faculty from different departments/programs who can serve as co-mentors.
- CV, including graduate G.P.A. and courses taken with their corresponding grades.
- Letter of recommendation from the student's primary academic advisor
- Confirmation from a co-mentor of their willingness to co-advise the student
- Description of recent research and engagement activities around the theme of translational sensory science.
